February 7

TEACHER'S MESSAGE

Next week is our Valentine's Party on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in the afternoon. I encourage written, simple valentine's notes and non-sugar treats. But of course, what you and your child decides is fine.

We have 'thoughtful' homework for Valentines Day (DUE FEBRUARY 11). Your child received 3 hearts and 3 names (keep the names a surprise and don't tell who you have in your envelope). Glue (or just write) each name on the back of the pink heart. Your child should cut out each pink heart as well. Think of one word to write on the front of the heart that best fills that child's bucket (and should describe or tell what that child is like). For example, ask your child if that other child draws very well, is kind to others, shares well, is friendly, is helpful, does well at math, is a great story writer, has pretty hair, has a funky style, etc???

Help your child think of one word to write. The word you (or your child) prints on the front of the heart needs to be as large as possible and clearly printed on the pink heart. That child will get their picture taken with the 'special' - bucket filling hearts that they will get to keep.

This week we've written a  Literacy Centers. Next week a 'health' goal.

Our next Moving and Munching is Friday, Feb. 28 - MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! We will feature these favorite songs - Ryan's Pressure Off, Matthew's Gotta Catch 'Em All and Teddy's We Will Rock You. Sounds like a blast - JOIN US!

Just a heads-up for an upcoming Field Trip. On Feb. 18 - 20, we will leave the school at 12:30 and skate from 12:45 to 2:00. Your child will need to be ready with skates and a winter or skiing or hockey helmet NOT A BIKE HELMET. All volunteers are expected to wear a helmet too if they are on the ice. WE NEED 4-5 VOLUNTEERS EACH TIME WE SKATE. A FIELD TRIP FORM WILL GO HOME NEXT WEEK. IF YOU CAN VOLUNTEER, PLEASE FILL IN THE BOTTOM SECTION OF THE COVER LETTER.

We are continuing Gymnastics. Please make sure your child is dressing for Gymnastics every day. Please wear comfortable clothes, hair tied back, no dangling jewelry, no hoodies, no long pants or long sleeves and girls if you wear a dress/skirt wear pants under your dress/skirt.

Read your child's T.W.A.S. journal every weekend. Please read the note on the front of the journal. thanks
T.W.A.S. (This Week At School)
This journal will come home every Friday. Please take the time to let your child read their T.W.A.S. written work. Parents are encouraged to print a reply to their child’s written work.
OPTIONAL HOMEWORK – Students can write about their weekend. Students will be asked if they would like to share their weekend journal work in class on Monday.   RETURN THIS BOOK EVERY MONDAY.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
Letter sounds to review at home: p/b/f/v/t/d/a/o/k/g/m/nl/r/u/s/z/i/th/th/qu/sh/zh/ch/w/wh/j/h/x/y/e/KING ED/oo/oo/ou/ow

NEW SOUNDS - aw/au (both say ' awwwwww - ful' for the rotten apple)

We are busy working on capitals and periods in a sentence. PLEASE CHECK OUT VIDEO LINK BELOW AND PRACTICE WRITING SENTENCES AT HOME. Encourage your child to write a story, write about their day or write to a relative to practice writing proper sentences.

MATH:
We are working on the concept of more and less (fewer). You can take two items (such as 8 red blocks and 6 blue blocks) and ask your child, which has more/less. Then your child should be able to compare them (partner them up) and count those that don't have a partner (the more/less)

OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - Practice counting by 1's, 5's and 10's to 100. Practice counting by 2's to 20. Identify any number from 1-100 (especially confident with 1-20 - the teen numbers can be tricky). Be confident with identifying a number and being able to tell what is one/two more and one/two less.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:

Ask your child about the different levels (decibels) of sound and how it can affect our ears. See pics below.
We started the Sense of Touch too.

OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - With adult support, try experiments at home. Here is a video to support you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lpev_Raequo. Here are some resources - http://www.learnplayimagine.com/2013/01/12-games-and-activities-to-teach.html
