March 17 - Writing Sample

Hi Parents
As you pick up your child's belongings (shoes, school work etc) from school at your designated time, I would like you to make sure to go through their items. I have included a recent writing sample that has a picture prompt of a fox jumping through the long grass.
When I gave the students 30 minutes to write their own narrative (imagined) story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ3RwPeerOg.

I was looking as to what skills they already possessed and what areas I still needed to teach.
The areas I look at were:
1. Did the writer think of their own story idea?
2. Is the writer's work legible?
3. Did they sound out their own words (that they did not know the spelling of)?
4. Did they write the correct spelling of words they should know (by now in Grade 1)?
5. Were they able to tell a beginning, middle or end to their story?
6. Did they use 'fairly' appropriate use of capitals and periods for their sentences?

On your child's writing sample, you will see two sections at the bottom: Has (what was seen in their written story) and Work On (areas that were missing or needs to work on). Over the next several months, you can review the Beginning, Middle and End when you listen to stories and use this strategy to write stories.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Here are some picture prompts that may be fun to use at home:
