WRITING

There are several types/styles of writing that Grade 1 students can do. Here are some examples.  I'm sure I missed some but I hope it will help with a focus at home. Make writing a daily activity.
For Grade 1 you can review and practice these skills:
- proper capitals and periods
- legibility, spaces between words, proper letter size, proper use of upper/lower case letters
- using a dictionary
- child rereading their own work to detect any problems
- using their Lively Letter knowledge to sound out words
- drawing pictures (using details and color)

Personal Narrative:
- T.W.A.S (or T.W.A.H - This week at home )
-Journal (daily thoughts or gratitude journal)

Imaginative Narrative
- write any type of story

Research
- record information that you learn, via books or online reliable resources (such as National Geographic)
- WATCH live webcams (such as a live can on an animal at a zoo)

Write a list
- grocery list
- plan for day at home

Letter
- write letter to classmates/family/seniors homes/hospital workers etc./author online (like Jann Brett)
- email

Procedural Writing (first, second, third.... first, then, last)
- How to make a cake
- how to make a snowman

Poetry, Songs, Interview Questions , Jokes

Write a Beginning of a story and have someone else in your family finish it

Read several books (or watch online) and write up report on the best/worst ones

On Netflix, your child can watch The Magic School Bus https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/70264612. It has great science information and facts in their videos. If you don't have Netflix you can find it on YouTube but all the videos are not all on one site (REMEMBER TO ALWAYS BE AWARE THERE COULD BE ADVERTISING ON YOU TUBE).

You can EASILY sign up for Science experiments - at Mad Science Of Southern Alberta at
https://calgary.madscience.org/
Go to the bottom of the page and fill in SIGN UP FOR EXPERIMENTS AND PROMOTIONS. You will get a weekly (or so) email with fun and easy experiments.

BUILDING THINGS SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS - (have fun with these experiments and support your child in building, as they may need a hole poked in a hard material or an adult may need to cut a more difficult material). Some building links below before building People Homes.

First two pics are some background ideas on materials and fasteners you may need for the experiments.
